Goal: Replace the bookkeeping involved with generating treasure and tracking.
Design:
Players will have a WEALTH LEVEL (WL) which goes from 1 to 10. (See chart at end for how WL translates to expected wealth & level from DMG)
Items will have a COST LEVEL (CL) which also ranges from 1 to 10. The general correlation between CL and rarity is as follows.
| Rarity | CL Range |
| Common | 1 |
| Uncommon | 2 to 3 |
| Rare | 4 to 6 |
| Very Rare | 7 to 8 |
| Legendary | NA |
| Artifacts | NA |
Market places will have a SHOP LEVEL (SL) which ranges from 1 to 10. In general, the larger the community the higher their SL will be. Naturally, special locations or circumstances can alter these.
Available Wares - Allow each player to shop for a number of items depending on the size of the market location. Generally 1 roll for a village up to 4 (or more) in a large city.
Shopping - How it works
Gaining Wealth
Whenever the characters find a large pile of treasure (coins from a dragon horde, goods from a bandit camp, etc), the DM can indicate that the players can roll to increase their wealth level. Each player rolls a d10 and if they roll higher than their current WL, then they increase by one.
There can be other ways this increases as well, such as acquiring the deed to a winery or other events. These could lead to automatic increases.
Treasures
It is possible to find valuable pieces of art, rare gems or other priceless objects. These items will have a WL assigned to them and Instead of adding directly to the players wealth, can instead be used to purchase an item up to the WL of the treasure without having to make a purchasing roll.
Other Notes
Possibly add in events or NPC’s that can modify any of the above. IE, smugglers that allow you an extra shopping roll or a rich merchant ally that can increase your shopping level?
Add in ways (like owning a business) that keeps your WL at “floor” level.
